Breakfast San Diego - Beach Grass Cafe - Unusual and Flavorful Choices

November 7, 2009

Food, Breakfast

I’ve known about Beach Grass Cafe for awhile, and honestly thought of it as a more expensive brunch and "date night" choice so I hadn’t been there in some time though I did enjoy the food when I’d went.

When Sue and I met this past month though, while hunting for our next breakfast spot in our continuing quest for the best breakfast spots in town - the breakfast menu looked too good to pass up.

Choices like the Rissoto Breakfast Brule with Creamy Arborio rice, scented with orange and burnt sugar crust should not be missed. I tried their breakfast pizza and was not dissapointed.  Their coffee is a local roasted brand and its yummy.

They have two locations - one in Solana Beach on the 101 and another now in Encinitas.  Here’s a link to the breakfast menu: http://www.beachgrasscafe.signonsandiego.com/3.html

Kids in the Kitchen

The Junior League of San Diego is hosting a FREE family event on March 28 from 10am-2pm called Kids in the Kitchen.  It is an interactive health and wellness fair at the Toby Wells YMCA in Kearny Mesa that includes local chefs demonstrating/sampling healthy foods, fitness stations for kids, and more.

Check out more information here: http://www.jlsd.org/?nd=kids_in_the_kitchen

I’ve never been to one of these events, but they’ll have interactive booths sharing information about health-related topics, such as reading a nutrition label, healthy snack alternatives, and the importance of wearing sunscreen and drinking water.  All good things.  Check it out if you can!

Free Ice Cream - For Expecting Mommies

Richard Walker’s - German Pancake!

March 24, 2008

Food, Breakfast

A continuation in our quest for the best breakfast spots, my friend Sue and I met this month at Richard Walker’s downtown and while we had to wait in the line a few minutes, we were rewarded with yummy food, a great casual yet elegant spot in the heart of a fun neighborhood downtown.

The nice surprise for me, was reading the menu and instantly noting the familiar dutch and german pancake from a childhood favorite of mine in Chicago Walker Brothers.  Turns out to be related ownership and no question the quality and attention to flavor is consistent.

The spot is small, cozy, service is excellent and we had a great time.  Highly recommend this spot.

Surati Farsan Mart - Indian Vegetarian Cuisine

September 22, 2007

Food, Indian

A friend treated me this past week to a lunch at Surati Farsan Mart and I am still thinking about it.  Located on Black Mountain Rd this restaurant had the most flavorful, fresh, hearty Indian food I’ve ever had.

I need to admit, I’m a carnivore.  I was expecting to hate this experience.  And yet, literally, every dish I had was excellent.  The Masala Dosa was crispy and spicy.  Dipped in the sauce and savored with the soup I could have been happy.  But, my friend also ordered a variety of Puri which were terrific.

I really enjoyed the decor as well.  While this is a take out place, the restaurant had a contemporary, new feel to it.  Complete with sconces with bamboo, and a flat screen tv showing Indian films.  It was quiet, but fun.

A friend shared with me that she has a friend who stops in for their large variety of sweets and has them shipped as gifts.  I’m not surprised.  They were beautiful.

Breakfast - La Jolla - Bippy’s Crepe Cafe

September 20, 2007

Food, Breakfast

Need a great meeting place on a week-day morning?  This spot was ideal and offered a wonderful breakfast.  Parking was ample at 9:30 on the street nearby, the food was beautifully presented and more importantly delicious and the location quiet and perfect for conversation.

I’d come back here in a heartbeat.  Check out the photo of our food, buckwheat flour crepes, wonderful hearty choices as well as dessert choices.
