Baby Boot Camp - for Moms

August 20, 2007

Staying Fit

New to San Diego this year are several locations of this National Franchise.  Meeting in Carmel Valley and La Jolla and several other areas around the City of San Diego, these groups permit you to bring your child in her/his stroller but offer you a work out including running, pilates, yoga and abdominal excercises designed to get Moms back in shape.

I have no personal experience with this company, but I think its great to have these options.  And looking at the Carmel Valley page, the organizer has some great work outs planned.  A run from La Jolla to PB, Boot Camp at the Zoo and plenty of social outlets too including evenings for Moms to pamper themselves and a team to run together for Race for the Cure.

Baby Boot Camp proudly relays they are the only stroller work out company that requires their instructors to be certified fitness professionals.  Don’t know if its true or not, but if so perhaps their workouts are better designed. They also offer a pre-natal class which is a great idea for Moms getting ready for the changes in their lives.

Moms In Motion Running Team

This organization, Moms In Motion, facilitates the creation of teams nation-wide of Moms for a variety of sports.  The idea is to focus on an event and support a charity and work together towards your goals.  Here in San Diego, the first teams are running teams in Mission Bay area - check them out:

I have no personal experience with this group, but I know my own running club helped a lot when I ran my first marathon and I believe having support and the fun of a group can be a huge asset to achieving your goals.

North County Tennis League

Staying Fit, Tennis

This organization offers to set up matches for singles and doubles play in the North County area.  I don’t have any personal experience with the organization.  But, it seems like a great way to connect with players.

ActiveKidz Gym - Sorrento Valley

Brian Blacher owns this children’s Gym in Sorrento Valley.  Its located right past the Torrey Hills neighborhood in Carmel Valley on Sorrento Valley Road.  So, its very close to home for those of us in Carmel Valley.

The facility is new, clean, well maintained.  Classes run the gamut from Karate, to sibling work together and play together classes (I think this is a cool idea).  The facility has a climbing wall, small golf putting area and tons of mats and running room.  They also offer yoga for adults simultaneously.  The teachers are enthusiastic and the kids seem to have a good time.

http://activekidz.net/ has the class schedules online.

Carmel Valley Tennis

I have no personal experience with this organization, but have been thirsting to get back to a regular tennis game.  I love to play and its been years since I’ve been able to play regularly.  http://www.carmelvalleytennis.net/

If I understand what happened correctly, we used to have public courts that were free by the rec center here in Carmel Valley.  When the Parks Department was having trouble financially, I guess they looked for someone to take over the courts commercially.  A local tennis shop stepped in and they have turned the courts into a bit of a center with lessons, leagues, etc.  They also offer adult and youth clinics which are essentially group lessons.  Reserving a court now costs money - $10/hr for residents slightly higher for non-residents.

Now I just need to figure out how to find tennis partners!

Its a girls thing - Surf Diva - Lessons for Women - La Jolla

If you’re like me and weren’t raised along the ocean, surfing is a bit of a mystery still.  I took one set of lessons and failed miserably.  Couldn’t even understand what my instructor was saying frankly there was so much lingo in his speech.

Anyway, I’ve heard AMAZING things about Surf Diva in La Jolla and intend to rope a bunch of my girlfriends into going for a class one week-end this summer.  Its my goal to learn to surf before my daughter does!  And this place specializes in working with women.

24 Hour Fitness - Solana Beach

Staying Fit

If you’re looking for a place to work out close to Carmel Valley, an alternative to the Pacific Athletic Club, there is a 24 Hour Fitness club located in Solana Beach.  I’ve heard child care is good here and the facility is nice.  http://www.24hourfitness.com - look up address, phone here by zip code and you’ll get the Solana Beach info.

Stroller Strides

November 29, 2006

Staying Fit

I never tried these classes as I love to run long distances and preferred to take the jogging stroller for those with the kids.  But, I’ve heard good things about this program.  Classes are available all over the city including Carmel Valley and I often times see the Moms setting out from Ashley Falls school off Del Mar Heights Road.

These were popular with Moms after their first pregnancies especially.  I’d imagine it gets harder to do this kind of thing with a double stroller, but maybe some Moms who have done it can comment….

Pacific Athletic Club

The Pacific Athletic Club in Carmel Valley is an option if you’re willing to pay the steep membership fees to have access to a great health club, heated pools (open longer hours than the local rec center), and children’s classes/activities with child care.  Its nice, there’s no question, but you pay for it.  General membership is one fee, when children reach a certain age they must be added to the membership and tennis/raquet membership is extra.

http://www.pacsandiego.com/ has all the info and some photos.  The childcare here is great if you want to get a work out in, limited to 2 hour time-frames, but they offer a lot of good children’s classes (from sports, to art, to drama, etc.), camps during summer and vacations from school and for adults there are a ton of great Yoga, Personal Trainer, and Spin type classes too.

The facility is new and offers a full Spa as well.  There is a healthy food area too for families and several pools for the kids that are heated.  One pool is no more than 3 feet deep the whole length and offers a waterfall to cool the little ones off.  There are two other large pools - one adult only - the other for families.

Swim lessons are offered here and I’ve heard good things about them.  Personal swim lessons are available too.
